Mother Nature Gives us a Time Out

February 12, 2013

This past weekend, Mother Nature gave us a “time out”. How well did you deal with yours? I was lucky, I didn’t lose power, so in turn I made an extra effort to extend my gratitude to neighbors where I could, and shoveled the back porch to provide extra bird seed for the loca flock. However, even after journaling and listnening to meditative music, I was still left with a LOT of free time, and couldn’t help but become restless.

In today’s society where everything is fast-fast-fast and we are trying to find new ways to multi-task even more than we already do, it’s hard to slow down, even when “forced” to do just that. But Mother Nature knows what she needs, and by making our homes upon her, therefore what WE need as well. So in doing my best to be in the moment, I baked cookies…bird watched…did laundry…and tried to wind myself down several notches. It took me more than 24 hours, but I finally got to a place where I could just be present and focus on the moment at hand, no matter how small the task I was doing – or not doing.
If it took you longer than that to unwind, it’s not completely your fault. On Sunday, 2/10, we had our New Moon in Aquarius, which is all about inspiration. Last month’s New Moon was in Capricorn, which bring a focus on planning; whereas the Aquarius New Moon moves those ideas we’ve been planning into our reality. It encourages us to stretch our imagination, to think outside the box, and lends unique insights into the big picture. However, Aquarius is also an air element, which can make us feel flighty or find it difficult to focus; while we are excited about those new ideas, we can’t seem to put them into practice. Focus on your lower 3 chakras (solar, sacral & root) to help ground your physical & mental energy so that you can jot some of these new ideas down to possibly put them into motion in the near future.
In grounding your physical energy, you can eat foods that resonate with your root chakra such as carrots, potatoes, parsnips, beets, onions, eggs, meats, beans, tofu, or peanut butter to name a few. There are gemstones you can carry with you or hold to ground your energy, such as Hematite, Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, or Garnet. You could burn a candle or incense that is scented from a tree like pine, balsam, fir, or patchouli. Placing your bare feet upon the ground is also very helpful in reconnecting with Mother Earth, but this time of year can be challenging. Instead, try placing bare feet upon the floor in your home, or massaging the bottom of your feet with lotion to open up your foot chakras and connect to your physical body. Pick whichever form of grounding speaks strongest to your senses, and repeat as often as necessary.
In being grounded, it helps us to be present in this moment. When we allow ourselves to be present, our awareness expands, and in being fully aware, we can see and feel clearly. We understand better what our needs truly are, and how to meet them. Being present as often as possible during this Aquarius Moon will stretch our imagination and insights to new limits, bringing new understanding to both our hearts and minds. Your job is to be still, and just listen…receive…to allow yourselves to be open to new solutuions, new ideas, new insights that can change your mind, your life, and even the world.
Well geeze, when I say it like that, it’s a bit overwhelming… But new ideas or ways of thinking can be overwhelming, at first. So be gentle with yourself throughout this process of awakening. it’s ok to take baby steps, and it’s certainly ok to take 3 steps forward and 2 back. When your heart is ready, it will lead the way. The trick is quieting the mind enough to hear and feel the heart; but when you do, everything changes. So take the time to quiet that mind chatter, and be patient. Insight will come visit with you in ways you never imagined.
